There's No Place Like Home

I created this collage based around the lyrics from the song "I'll Drown" by Soley. Soley has a unique voice and creates beautiful sounds that sound trance like with lyrics that describe a nightmare/dream. From this song i used the lyrics " In his house out there his windows are eyes, his garden has waterfalls"  and "We'll never escape from this sad, sad house". This depicts an unusual but sad story that has an undergoing feeling of something dark and twisted, maybe hidden in the house or ground. The man inside the house is trapped and has been for so long he's almost became apart of the house.
Using a photo i took of a house at night, i ripped it up and stuck it down to show the cracks of loneliness living inside that house. I picked up on the blue sky and tried to print the lyrics which didn't work so i used a crayon to write them out. The words aren't so clear but it shows how old the house has grown and the state of confusion people feel when their dreams feel real but they know they are not.I wrote "waterfalls" in black on red so it would stand out. people will read that first before anything else and it will trick them. When thinking of waterfalls they may think of tranquillity and peace but in this case it's actually so lonely all he can hear is his own tears.I used the same colours as that exit sign from my second sketchbook to pick up on the danger of going into this dream and getting trapped in the house.
I created a print and some other drawn prints to show the loss of control and not being in  reality, instead that unusual dream feeling. Really this is a nightmare where you can't escape but nothing is happening to explicitly, the unknown danger creeps up on you. On the next side i used the lyrics "Cause seeing clear would be a bad idea" playing on the idea of not wanting to turn around to see what the danger is. It creates the uncontrollable conflict in your mind where you want to run or look but can't as your unconscious is in control. I also stuck down a unfocused photo of a firework to work with the lyrics of not seeing cler. It almost looks like  a polaroid with the white border but its is torn, and i used brio to draw lines before spraying it so the ink ran. It shows the need to run and escape but you cant parts of your mind jump ahead like the running ink but your body is stuck in the same spot. I also like the unfocused photo as hearing the bang of a firework initiates fear until you see that it is a firework and not a gun or something else that's dangerous.
I quite like this piece and how it holds meanings to the lyrics of the song. To improve it i would work on the way i write the text on the paper and how i present it so it is clearer to red but still looks uneven, shaky to show the loss of control. I would also like to try different compositions, although i am happy with how this one is set out i would like to experiment and see the effect of different outcomes.
