Stop Motion

Stop motion is something i have been interested in doing, but felt i wasn't patient enough, or have the key to detail that is needed to create these. However, once having a go using clay it was quite simple and fun. I would definitely like to try this again and create something more ambitious.

First set up the camera in a position where it has a good view and do not move it again as a slight movement in background can lose the effect of the stop motion. We molded the clay into a snake and proceeded to make multiple versions of various sizes. The various sizes are key to make the snake look like it grows bigger and does not just randomly appear. The different versions also have different details like the head looking around and the tail flicking when it goes under.
Also created scenery, like a tree. We had to make more versions to show it growing from the ground, each size was needed otherwise it would create a jump and not look real. Also did some movements so it looked like the branches moved a little when growing bigger. Then created some flowers to add to detail.
It was quite fun molding the tree and adding detail, it would be nice to develop this skill so i would be able to do more intricate details and create bigger sceneries and do more ambitious stop motions.

Using paper we created a basic backdrop for the stop motion to take place. Beginning with the smallest dot we took three photos then replaced it with the next size and repeated this until the tree grew fully. Everything had to have at least three pictures before it moved so it would show on video longer and not be missed. When it came to the snake moving we needed to use all the pieces and carefully keep track of where they were placed.

I think the movement of the snake was really good as it genuinely appears like it goes through the paper and looks around. The rocks were supposed to roll in, however it was difficult to make them look as if they were rolling frame by frame. The tree growing needed a little more care with the trunk sizes when growing but overall turned out quite good.
