Good and Bad

I painted this globe with the idea of how every story has a good vs evil tale. This bad Vs good is usually the storyline where the good must defeat the evil. In victorian time it became a popular belief that everyone had a good and evil inside them like two personalities. Art and stories became  a way to travel and explore this dark side with the unconscious- dreams and nightmares. For this piece i also see it as a balance of healthy and unhealthy dreaming. The top half is  glossy like a ripe fruit and the colours symbolise creative ideas forming. The bottom half represents unhealthy dreaming where the mind is so stuck in day dreaming they are distant from reality and struggle with coping and creating ideas. I put pieces of ripped tissue paper and pages from a book in the middle as if it was being fed these inspirations and shows that the person chooses what to do with it, become either side of the globe.
The bottom side was painted with black acrylic paint creating a matte finish. This dullness contrasts to the glossy white side, conveying the loss of ability to be creative with their own ideas as they lose ambition and energy. Black has strong connotations of mystery, death, evil and grief. I think this worked to show how it is the bad side, unhealthy and how people become lost in fantasising but it doesn't bring them true happiness. The black paint was easily scratched off the surface so i needed to do another coat to protect it.
I painted the white side with glossy paint that made it smooth to touch compared to the black paint that created that horrible scratchy feeling with nails. I used acrylic paint to roughly paint random shapes. These represent creative ideas that all different and can fit together to create something new. Although i think the idea shows what i want it to, the outcome isn't that good as i wanted straight lines and block colours. You can see the brushstrokes on the paint and the shapes aren't straight. Maybe doing the shapes smaller would work best as i could have printed them on so i would have no brush strokes in the paint. Another issue i have with this globe is how it wont stay together with the paper in between as it prevents the pieces to close properly. I should probably need to glue it but keeping everything in place is difficult.
To improve this i would keep the globe shape but i like the idea of the white dripping down with colours and maybe off the globe. it shows the overflow of creative ideas and ambition taking over the dark side. Additionally, i like how i could scratch the black paint off as i could do another version with the black overtaking instead of the white and just roughly scratch away some paint to show the white underneath, in lines. I think it would be interesting to have at least 3 of these of various versions, a balanced one and then a mostly good and mostly bad that i described before. I would have them hanging from the ceiling in various heights but close together or in a line.
